BMW Car Club - Scotland

Monthly Meet - 1st & 2nd November 2008

In a new departure for the Region, we decided to try and incorporate an overnight stay into one of our meets and this was to be the 4th Annual Mega Meet in Aberdeenshire.

Saturday 1st Nov

On the Saturday afternoon, the members from the East and West Coast meet up at Scone for the trip through the Perthshire/Tayside countryside up to Aberdeen. Although a bit nippy, it was sunny and those with convertibles drove all the way up with roofs down – even though it was nearly pitch black when we arrived at the hotel.

Having got checked in, we hit the bar for a couple of aperitifs before our meal. Post meal it was down to the serious part of the evening – the Pub Quiz. The papers were dished out by NeRo, our resident Quiz Master/Compiler, and the competition began. There were 4 sections to the quiz - General Knowledge, Name That Tune, Catchphrase and Name the Car.

The quiz winners were – 1st Davy Tombstone, 2nd Stevie Connelly, and 3rd Paul Rice. The Booby prize of 3 air fresheners went to Tommy (Not that you or your car smell). Thanks to NeRo, Pete, Issy and Stevie for donating prizes.

The evening concluded with a few (too many) nightcaps and a bit of banter, which as this is a family publication, cannot be repeated.

Sunday 2nd Nov

The venue for the 4th Mega Meet was The Old Mill Inn, Maryculter, which had been organized by Pete. We were given a private room; well we didn’t want to mix with the riff-raff, where a Carvery was on offer.

We descended on the Old Mill in 3 groups – the overnighters, the Aberdeen mob and a number of Sassenachs who came up for the day - Onno, John, Alister and Steven from Cheshire (Good effort Steve). All in all, there were 28 cars, including half a dozen Alpinas. The good turnout may have been due to the nice sunny day.

Post the meeting, the East/West Coasters decided to go home via Braemar/Glenshee to see some snow whilst the locals chose to go over to the nearby Cairn O Mount. With the snowy mountains background, it turns out, that Glenshee was the better place to go for the Photo Shoot.

Overall it was a great weekend. The experiment of the overnight stay was successful and will definitely be done again in the future.
